Most DIYers make the mistake of only calculating the bricks. A durable patio requires three layers. This free paver calculator breaks down all three for you:
1. The Gravel Base
You cannot lay pavers on dirt. You need a compacted gravel base (Class 5 or Crush & Run). Our tool calculates the Tons needed. Use 4 inches for walkways/patios and 6 inches for driveways.
2. The Bedding Sand
On top of the gravel, you need a 1-inch layer of coarse sand to level the bricks. We calculate this in Cubic Yards (for bulk orders) and 50lb Bags (for hardware store runs).
3. The Pavers
We calculate the total count based on square footage, adding a 5% waste factor. You will need these extra bricks for cutting pieces to fit around the edges.
Common Paver Sizes
- 4×8 (Holland Stone): The classic brick look. Approx 4.5 bricks per sq ft.
- 6×9 (Cobble): Common for borders and driveways.
- 12×12 or 16×16: Large format pavers, faster to install but heavier to lift.
Paver Edging Kit (No-Dig)
Mandatory: Without this edging, your pavers will spread and gaps will open up.

Rubber Mallet (White Head)
Do not use a black mallet. It leaves scuff marks on your expensive new pavers.
