How to Estimate Wood Fence Materials

Building a privacy fence is a significant investment. This free fence calculator breaks down the four main components you need to buy: Posts, Rails, Pickets, and Concrete.

1. Post Spacing (8ft vs 6ft)

Standard fence sections are 8 feet long. However, if you live in a high-wind area or want a stronger fence, select 6 feet. This will increase the number of posts and concrete bags you need but prevents the fence from blowing over.

2. Picket Styles

  • 6-inch Dog Ear: The most common, affordable privacy fence.
  • Board on Board: Pickets overlap each other to eliminate gaps. This provides 100% privacy but requires approx 30% more lumber.

3. Concrete Requirements

You cannot set a fence post in loose dirt. Our tool estimates 1.5 bags of concrete per post (50lb bags), which is the standard for a 2-foot deep hole.
